In the quest to find savings in the household budget, it’s not always possible to eliminate certain expenses. The next best strategy is to find ways to lower the bills you have. If you don’t have the time or expertise to do the job yourself, the best solution is to use a bill negotiation app. For that reason, we’ve prepared this guide to the eight best bill negotiation apps of 2024.
The Best Bill Negotiation Apps of 2024
The table below shows the list of the eight best bill negotiation apps of 2024, and what we believe each is best for. A detailed description of each app will follow.
App | Best For |
BillShark | Best all-around |
Trim | Low negotiation rate |
Experian BillFixer | Bill negotiation + credit monitoring |
BillCutterz | Household bills |
Medical Cost Advocate | Reducing medical bills |
BillAdvisor | Insurance premiums |
Hiatus | Insurance rate comparisons |
Rocket Money | Canceling subscriptions |
1. BillShark
BillShark made our list of the best bill negotiation apps as the best all-around. The company claims a 90% success rate, and that you can save up to 25% on monthly bills in just two minutes. That’s not surprising, given that the app is backed by Shark Tank star, Mark Cuban. The app can be used on iOS and Android mobile devices, as well as on the web, and can be downloaded free of charge.
What we like about BillShark is that not only can it negotiate bills, but also cancel subscriptions. It even extends the service to negotiating bills for small businesses. BillShark’s fees are in line with the industry standard, and you’ll be billed three days after a Bill negotiation.
- Services: Negotiates monthly bills (Internet, phone, TV, home security, and other services), cancels unwanted subscriptions
- Fees: 40% of savings or $9 per canceled subscription
- Other features: Also negotiates small business bills
- BBB Rating: A
2. Trim
Trim claims customers save an average of $213 per year. Who are we to argue with that claim, given that it has a Better Business Bureau rating of A+, and 4.5 out of five stars from 279,000 users on Google Play? Trim works by tracking your spending, canceling unwanted subscriptions, and negotiating for lower cable, Internet, and phone bills.
We gave Trim our #2 ranking based on their unusually low bill negotiation fee. At just 15% of the amount saved on each bill, it’s almost certainly the lowest in the industry. If that fee structure isn’t attractive enough, Trim performs subscription cancellations free of charge!
- Services: Negotiates monthly bills (cable, Internet, and phone), cancels unwanted subscriptions
- Fees: 15% of savings
- Other features: Not indicated
- BBB Rating: A+
3. Experian BillFixer
Experian BillFixer claims its service will save consumers an average of $263 per year. There’s no fee charged for the savings Experian generates, but there is a catch. Experian BillFixer is part of the Experian CreditWorks service, which includes a fee of $24.99 per month. Put another way, BillFixer is not a standalone service you can subscribe to strictly to negotiate your bills.
If you do choose to sign up for the service, it provides one of the most comprehensive credit and identity protection plans in the industry. That includes three-bureau FICO Scores, identity theft protection, and Experian CreditLock. If you are primarily interested in credit monitoring but also want to consider bill negotiation, Experian BillFixer is an excellent choice.
- Services: Primarily a credit monitoring service that also provides bill negotiation services
- Fees: $24.99 per month, after a seven-day free trial
- Other features: Credit monitoring
- BBB Rating: Not rated as an independent entity
4. BillCutterz
BillCutterz made our list due to the large number of household bills covered by their negotiations. All you need to do is sign up for the service and send your bills in. BillCutterz will handle the negotiations from there. They also ask service providers about discounts and promotions to give you even more savings. Services are available for households, businesses, and nonprofits.
Our major reservation about this BillCutterz is the cost of service. At 50% of the savings generated, it is on the higher end of the industry scale. But you can lower the percentage to 40% if you pay the invoice immediately.
- Services: Negotiates cell phone, cable and satellite TV, Internet, landline telephone, alarm and security systems, satellite radio, bundles, and, in some states, electric bills
- Fees: 50% of savings, reduced to 40% if you pay upfront
- Other features: Money Saving Blog, Savings Calculator, $10 Amazon gift card when you refer family and friends to the service
- BBB Rating: A+
5. Medical Cost Advocate
With so many Americans being saddled with open medical bills, Medical Cost Advocate can be the most important bill negotiation service on this list. After all, out-of-pocket and uncovered medical expenses can easily be many thousands of dollars. That’s what Medical Cost Advocate specializes in, and they claim they typically reduce unpaid medical bills by between 20% and 50% of the original amount. They can negotiate your healthcare bills, whether or not you have health insurance.
Not only does Medical Cost Advocate negotiate bills owed, but they also handle prospective negotiations on medical services you are about to obtain. The preferred settlement method is paying off the reduced balance by credit card, but they can set up a payment plan if you have insufficient credit limits to cover the remaining balance.
- Services: Negotiates medical bills
- Fees: Percentage of savings, but not specified
- Other features: Concierge and on-call advocacy, providing international patients with access to US healthcare
- BBB Rating: A+
6. BillAdvisor
BillAdvisor reports that an average customer saves $830 on their bills as a result of their services. Rather than charging a percentage of the amount saved the way most bill negotiation apps do, BillAdvisor charges a flat monthly fee of $12.99. You’ll need to determine if the annual cost of $156 will be justified by the amount of savings you expect to receive from the service.
BillAdvisor offers a major advantage over typical bill negotiation apps in that they also offer negotiation of your mortgage payment, as well as various types of insurance. That includes life, home, and auto insurance policies.
- Services: Negotiation of cell phone, cable/satellite TV, Internet, energy, mortgage, satellite radio, home security services, and various types of insurance policies
- Fees: $12.99 per month
- Other features: Not indicated
- BBB Rating: Not rated
7. Hiatus
Hiatus acts as something like a financial aggregator, enabling you to connect your financial accounts on the app for continuous monitoring. That enables Hiatus to track your spending for budgeting, and bill negotiation purposes, and to avoid checking account overdraft fees. It’s also able to detect pending rate increases in your bills to better enable the bill negotiation process. We’ve given Hiatus extra points for the ability to help you find lower insurance rates.
While we are concerned with the low rating from the Better Business Bureau, Hiatus has received 4.2 out of five stars from more than 6,600 iOS users on The App Store, and 4.0 out of five stars among nearly 600 Android users on Google Play.
- Services: Bill negotiations (cell phone and Internet) and subscription management
- Fees: $9.99 per month
- Other features: Budgeting, financial tracking, and insurance rate comparisons
- BBB Rating: D
8. Rocket Money
Rocket Money is part of the Rocket Mortgage organization, the largest retail mortgage lender in America. The app is designed to help you spend less and save more money through bill negotiations and subscription management. But it also provides budgeting, spending, insights, net worth calculations, and credit scores. The company claims it has saved its 5 million members over $1 billion.
Rocket Money offers two different plans. The Free version provides account linking, balance alerts, and spending tracking. It also includes subscription management to negotiate bills and eliminate unnecessary subscriptions. The fee for the service is 30% to 60% of the amount saved. The Premium version is available for between $4 and $12 per month and includes subscription cancellation, access to experts, a smart savings account, net worth tracking, shared accounts, and unlimited budgets.
- Services: Bill negotiations and subscriptions management
- Fees: 30% to 60% of bill negotiation savings, or $4 to $12 per month for the Premium plan (wide range owes to fees being negotiable)
- Other features: Budgeting, spending insights, net worth calculations, and credit scores
- BBB Rating: B
What are Bill Negotiation Apps?
Bill negotiation apps automate the bill negotiation and subscription cancellation process by reviewing your bills for potential reductions and canceling unneeded subscriptions. The people behind bill negotiation apps are skilled at reviewing various bills and quickly identifying excess charges. Sometimes the bill will be lowered as a result of reducing excess charges, while in other cases, the service will pursue available discounts and even plan re-negotiations.
Some apps connect to your financial accounts and perform automated reviews to identify areas of excess. Others operate on a manual basis, where you will need to submit bills you believe are excessive. Services usually charge a fee represented by a percentage of the amount saved. This is typically 40%, though it can be either higher or lower. Others charge a flat monthly fee.
Most will negotiate common household bills, like phone, Internet and cable, home security, satellite radio, and streaming services. Others have specializations, such as business expenses, insurance premiums, or medical bills.
How a Bill Negotiation App Can Help You
There’s nothing a bill negotiation app does that you cannot do for yourself if you have the time, experience, and negotiating skills. Most people lack one, two, or all three of those skills, and that’s when a bill negotiation app becomes necessary.
The major advantage of a bill negotiation app is that it can get the job of negotiating bills and canceling subscriptions done while you are busy doing other things. Because the services know the negotiation process, they can get it done more quickly and produce greater savings than you could if you attempted to do it on your own.
Bill negotiation services do charge a fee for the work they do. However, if the fee is charged on a percentage-of-savings basis, you’ll only pay the app if it can generate the promised savings.
How We Chose the Best Bill Negotiation Apps
To determine our list of what we believe to be the eight best bill negotiation apps we used the following criteria:
- Services offered.
- The number and type of bills negotiated.
- Fees charged.
- Other features provided.
- BBB (Better Business Bureau) rating.
- App specializations.
- User ratings on Google Play and The App Store.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the best bill negotiation app?
Since each bill negotiation app has its own specializations and service levels, the answer to that question depends on exactly what you expect the app to do. However, after evaluating numerous bill negotiation apps, we conclude that BillShark is tops in the field.
That evaluation is based on the number of bills they negotiate, as well as their willingness to help small business owners negotiate their bills.
Is bill negotiation worth it?
It depends on the cost of the service about the bills you are looking to reduce. Most bill negotiation apps charge a percentage of the amount saved on a bill, so you really can’t lose. But if a service charges a flat fee, you’ll need to determine if what you will pay for that fee over one year will be justified by the amount you reasonably expect to save on your bills.
What is the app that negotiates medical bills?
Medical Cost Advocate works specifically in the negotiation of medical bills. It is a highly regarded service and handles many different areas of healthcare finance.
Should You Sign up for a Bill Negotiation App?
It depends on how much excess there is in your finances. If you have a lot of services and subscriptions, it will almost certainly be worth using a bill negotiation app until you get those costs under control. If you have relatively low expenses to begin with, and no excess subscriptions, bill negotiation may not do you much good. If the bill negotiation service charges a flat fee for the service, you may be adding a new bill to your list of expenses more than anything else.
